The gospel. The glorious, ambiguous gospel. If you sat down 20 different Christians and asked them to explain the gospel you would likely get 20 different explanations.

This can be both good and bad.

What’s good about it is that it reaffirms the idea that Jesus really was everything to all people. We have all been brought up differently, even within cultural groups. No two people will see the world in the same way and that viewpoint is going to filter everything that we read, see and hear.

I love verses 11 and 12 of chapter 1. It just oozes honesty and transparency.

Romans 1:11-12

11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established; 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other’s faith, both yours and mine.

Fault Finding and Trash Can Lids

There is this idea in Christian circles that says we have to always stand up for what we believe. If someone we know is living a lifestyle in opposition to what’s explained in the Bible many of us feel it’s our responsibility to make sure they know God doesn’t approve.

While that may be necessary at times we so often make it a priority as if somehow that makes us bold in our faith. There is a name for people who always point out the flaws in others and that name is jerk.

The usual reasoning behind this thinking is that if we don’t tell them they won’t know they’re sinning. But Romans 1:20 says,

What I think is so great about the Bible is that no matter how many times you read a verse there will come a time when something new is gleaned. Just when you think a verse is a throw-away verse it becomes a directional verse.

What was once a verse that you almost skipped over to get to the more well-known verses is now giving you direction.
